Senior Patrol Leader (SPL)

Job Description
The Senior Patrol Leader is elected by the Scouts and serves as the top youth leader in the troop.

Reports to: Scoutmaster
Adult Mentor: Scoutmaster

Duties

  • Preside over all troop meetings, events, activities, and the annual program planning conference.
  • Chair monthly Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC) meetings; attend at least five (5) out of six (6) PLC meetings during his term.
  • Appoint other youth leaders with the Scoutmaster’s feedback and consent.
  • Work closely with the Scoutmaster to assign responsibilities and help train junior leaders.
  • Delegate tasks to the ASPLs and ensure an ASPL attends any meeting or function that he cannot attend.
  • Oversee the planning efforts of the Outing Senior Patrol Leader (OSPL) for all troop campouts (whether the SPL attends these outings or not).
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during his term.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL)

ASPLJob Description
The ASPL is the second-highest youth leader and supports the SPL in leading the troop.

Reports to: Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Scoutmaster

Duties

  • Help lead meetings and activities as assigned by the SPL.
  • Assume SPL responsibilities in his absence.
  • Assist and perform tasks assigned by the SPL.
  • Provide leadership and training to appointed junior leaders (Scribe, Librarian, Historian, Instructor, Quartermaster).
  • Serve on the PLC; attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of PLC meetings.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.

Junior Assistant Scoutmaster (JASM)

JASMJob Description
Serves in a near-adult leadership capacity, assisting the Scoutmaster. Must be at least 16 years old and not yet 18.

Reports to: Scoutmaster
Adult Mentor: Scoutmaster

Duties

  • Serve in the role of Assistant Scoutmaster where age requirements permit.
  • Complete duties assigned by the Scoutmaster.
  • Attend at least five (5) out of six (6) PLC meetings.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.

Troop Quartermaster

quartermasterJob Description
Manages troop equipment and ensures it is in good working order.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Adult Quartermaster

Duties

  • Keep track of all patrol and troop equipment, making sure it is clean, safe, and in good working condition.
  • Issue equipment to Scouts and ensure timely return in proper condition after events.
  • Oversee troop gear inspections and use the inspection forms.
  • Recommend when equipment needs to be repaired or replaced.
  • Work closely with the Adult Quartermaster.
  • Train and guide the Assistant Quartermaster and Patrol Quartermasters.
  • Be proficient in using the Quartermaster website and guide others to the appropriate resources.
  • Understand and follow Quartermaster policies, procedures, mission statement, and guiding principles.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during his term. 
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.

Troop Scribe

scribeJob Description
Maintains troop meeting records, including PLC notes and attendance.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Consult the previous Scribe to learn the role.
  • Attend PLC meetings, record minutes and attendance, and share notes with the PLC and adult Troop Secretary within two days.
  • Record troop meeting announcements and attendance; share notes with the adult Troop Secretary within two days.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Troop Scribe.

Troop Guide

troopGuideJob Description
Supports new Scouts, helping them integrate into the troop and learn Scout skills; must hold at least the Star rank.

Reports to: First Year Program Leader
Adult Mentor: First Year Program Leader

Duties

  • Ensure new Scouts feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed, and are treated respectfully. 
  • Guide new Scouts through skills and activities to help them feel confident in the troop and outdoors.
  • Help new Scouts earn advancements through First Class.
  • Support and advise the New Scout Patrol Leader, including attending PLC meetings with him.
  • Assist the Assistant Scoutmaster in teaching basic Scout skills.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.

Instructor

instructorJob Description
Teaches Scout skills and supports troop learning activities.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Learn the role from the previous Instructor or, if unavailable, the Youth Leadership Mentor.  
  • Teach Scouting skills needed by the troop or patrols, including skills related to Merit Badges.
  • Coordinate skill instruction with the PLC.
  • Prepare thoroughly for each teaching assignment.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Troop Instructor.

Bugler

buglerJob Description
Provides bugle calls at troop ceremonies, meetings, and campouts.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Learn the role from the previous Bugler, or if unavailable, the Youth Leadership Mentor.
  • Play “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Courts of Honor.
  • Provide bugle calls at campouts, including reveille and taps.
  • Play the bugle as requested by troop leadership for ceremonies or events.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term of service.
  • Set a good example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living by the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Bugler.

Librarian

librarianJob Description
Manages the troop library and helps Scouts access resources that support advancement and troop activities.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Consult the previous Librarian to learn the role.
  • Maintain the troop library by organizing materials, keeping accurate records, and adding new or replacement items as needed.
  • Manage the check-in/check-out system and follow up on overdue items. 
  • Make books, pamphlets, and other resources available at troop meetings.
  • Routinely remind the troop how to access the Troop Library and highlight resources related to upcoming activities or Merit Badges.
  • Work with the Adult Troop Webmaster to help maintain a digital catalog of library materials.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term of service.
  • Set a good example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living by the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Troop Librarian.

Historian

Preserves troop history by collecting photos and records and preparing media to share during recruitment activities and Court of Honor.

Duties

  • Consult the previous Historian to learn the role.
  • Collect and organize photos and records of troop activities and events.
  • Routinely invite Scouts and families to upload photos to the troop photo site.
  • Create slideshows or videos of troop activities for Courts of Honor.
  • Prepare promotional materials (such as slideshows, videos, or brochures) to support troop recruitment and outreach.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term of service.
  • Set a good example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living by the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Troop Historian.

Webmaster

webmasterJob Description
Maintains the troop website and online communication by keeping information accurate, current, and appropriate.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Consult the previous Webmaster to learn the role.
  • Review the troop website regularly and work with the Adult Webmaster to post upcoming activities and maintain troop webpages, including fixing broken links and removing outdated content.
  • Send Evites for Courts of Honor and other troop events.
  • Update the troop Google Calendar weekly using information from the troop newsletter.
  • Collect write-ups, photos, or short summaries from Scouts or leaders and post approved updates about troop activities.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term of service.
  • Set a good example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living by the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Troop Webmaster.

OA Troop Representative

OATroopRepresentative Job Description
Serves as the youth liaison between the troop and the Order of the Arrow lodge or chapter, promoting service, leadership, camping, and participation in OA activities. Must be an OA member.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Consult the previous OA Troop Representative to learn the role.
  • Serve as the communication link between the OA lodge or chapter and the troop.
  • Educate Scouts about the Order of the Arrow, including eligibility and opportunities.
  • Coordinate and support OA elections in the spring.
  • Promote lodge or chapter events to troop OA members.
  • Encourage Arrowmen to remain active and earn their Brotherhood rank.
  • Support troop camping, high adventure participation, and year-round Scouting activities.
  • Encourage community service participation within the troop.
  • Assist with leadership skills development in the troop.
  • Attend at least two-thirds (2/3) of troop meetings during the term of service.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living by the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and OA Obligation.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next OA Troop Representative.

Den Chief

denChiefJob Description
Serves as a role model and mentor to a Cub Scout den by supporting den and pack activities and helping Cub Scouts prepare to transition into a Scouts BSA troop; must hold at least the First Class rank.

Reports to: Den Leader and Youth Leadership Mentor
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Assist with activities at den meetings and help with pack meetings.
  • Meet regularly with the Den Leader to review meeting plans and expectations.
  • Model a positive image of Scouting and understand the purposes of Cub Scouting.
  • Encourage and prepare Cub Scouts (especially AOLs) to transition into a Scouts BSA troop.
  • Attend at least 70% of den meetings and events during the term and notify leaders in advance if unable to attend.
  • Encourage Cub Scouts to join a Boy Scout troop upon graduation.
  • Help out at weekly den meetings and monthly pack meetings.
  • Attends at least 70% of the den meetings/events during his service period.
  • Be a friend and mentor to the Cub Scouts in the den.

Leave No Trace Trainer

Teaches Leave No Trace principles and help ensure the troop practices responsible outdoor ethics on all outings.

Reports to: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Adult Mentor: Youth Leadership Mentor

Duties

  • Learn the role by consulting the previous Leave No Trace Trainer or, if unavailable, the Youth Leadership Mentor.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of and commitment to Leave No Trace.
  • Teach Scouts the principles of Leave No Trace and promote ethical decision-making in outdoor settings.
  • Help minimize the troop’s impact on the land during outings.
  • Assist Scouts in earning the Leave No Trace Award.
  • Set a positive example by wearing the uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living the Scout Oath and Law.
  • At the end of the term, advise and mentor the next Leave No Trace Trainer.
