Solar flares? Sunspots? Mountains? Stars? Planets? Meteors? Hiking and camping? Traveling at the speed of light??
Check! It’s happening!
Join Troop 805 on October 21-22nd for our newest adventure – Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Sonoma County. Our day starts with solar observing where we view our closest star and learn about sunspots, prominences, flares and more. We observe through both visible light and radio telescopes. You also get a chance to listen to the sun!
After our bag lunch, we hike the “Planet Hike” on our way to the top of Bald Mountain at 2,729 feet. This hike is a scale model of the solar system and allows you to “hike” through the entire solar system by shrinking it more than 2,360,000,000 times. With a step every 5 seconds, you are traveling at the speed of light. At a quicker pace you will be traveling faster than the speed of light!!
Starting at dusk, we visit the Robert Ferguson Observatory for their RFO Public Star Party. The Observatory’s three main telescopes are open for our viewing. Docents set up additional telescopes in front of the building. The friendly and knowledgeable docents are available to answer our questions.
We will camp overnight and Sunday morning we have the option to take the Canyon Trail, the Creekside Nature Trail, or go to the Visitor Center. Hurry up and register on Troopmaster because “Space” (haha) is limited to 14 Scouts!
