Introduction to Basic Backpacking

Date: Friday night, 7/12 through Sunday morning, 7/14
Cost: $40 per scout
Location: Redwood Regional Park in Oakland
Attire: Class A
Required: For scouts second year and above

Come join us on a fun adventure where we learn the basics of backpacking and hiking.  If you are thinking of going to Philmont in the next few years or just want to explore our beautiful trails, this adventure is for YOU!  In this adventure, we learn how to properly pack our backpacks, filter our water (demonstration only), cook with backpacking stoves using white gas, eat re-hydrated food, learn trail etiquette, and finally learn basic map and compass navigation.

We only have 16 slots.  This is for second year scouts and up.  Please sign up before all the slots are gone!

Note: All scouts attending this outing must come to the 7/9 COH. Groups will be formed during the COH for planning. 

DETAILS:
  • Short 3-mile hike (one way)
  • Use framed backpacks (external or internal frames)
  • Hiking boots or good pair of athletic shoes
  • Light weight sleeping bags
  • Troop Tents provided
  • 1-liter Nalgene bottle or camelback
  • Fleece or lightweight pullover for night
  • Bring sack dinner for Friday night – Saturday lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast will be backpacking meals and cooked by the scouts. (Samples of the freeze dry food for the scouts to see will be at the 7/9 COH group planning session).

Old Borges Ranch “Gordon Ramsay’s Hot Kitchen” Cooking Campout & Hike

Date: Saturday to Sunday, May 11–12, 2019
Location: Old Borges Ranch, Hanna Grove campsite in Walnut Creek
Cost: $35 (scouts and adults) for campsite and food
Drop off: Sycamore Park & Ride, Sat. 5/11 7am
Pick up: Return to Sycamore Park & Ride, Sun. 5/12 approx. 10:30am
Attire: Class A
Required:
Permission slip due by 4/30th
– If you are cooking, pre-approved meal plan due by 5/7th

Come out and do some cooking and hiking in at the Hanna Grove campsite at Old Borges Ranch. We also plan on a 5-mile hike for Saturday morning for those interested in completing 2nd class or hiking MB requirement.

We will be cooking 3 meals to cover most cooking requirements for Cooking or Camping merit badges and rank advancement. Hiking from Hanna Grove and around the area. Please bring 3 liters of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

If you are going for your cooking or camping merit badge requirement and want to cook, please let Mr. Yamada ASAP. Your menus will need to be pre-approved by your merit badge counselor by May. 7th.

Take a Hike – Mount Diablo (Cancelled/Postponed)

Date: February 18, 2019, Monday (Cancelled)
Meet: 2323 Mount Diablo Scenic Blvd, Diablo at 10:00am
Cost: $10/car entrance fee, each Scout should bring $5 (one-dollar bills) for the carpool
Attire: Class B
Bring: A sack lunch in your daypack, water, and 10 essentials

Our Troop is proud to announce we will plan a series of hikes according to MDSC’s “Highlander An Ongoing Quest” program.  Come join us on our first quest – Mount Diablo.

Future Quests will be a day trip for local hikes. With farther locations, we will plan Quest 1 on day one with an overnight and Quest 2 the next day before returning home.

Scouts and Adults can earn the Highlander patch and a rocker for each Quest completed.

Scouts can also:
(1) Fulfill Rank Requirements (example: Tenderfoot: 4a-d, 5a-c; Second Class: 3a-d, 4)
(2) Earn your hiking merit badge

Mt Diablo Camping Cook Out & Hike II


Dates: Saturday to Sunday, May 12-13, 2018
Location: Barbecue Terrace Group Campground @ Mt Diablo State Park (directions)
Drop off: Saturday 11am @ campground
Pick up: Sunday 10:30am @ campground
Cost: $25 (scouts or adults) cover campsite and food
Attire: Class A
Need: Hiking boots or good walking shoes, rain gears, sleeping bag & pad, 10 essentials

Angel Island Tour & Hike

Date: February 24, 2018 (Saturday)
Location: Angel Island
Meet: Sycamore Valley Park and Ride. Leaving 8:00 a.m. SHARP!
Return: Approximately 6:00 p.m. depending on traffic. Scouts will be driven home.
Cost: $48 per participant. Includes transportation, park entrance fee, guided tour, pastry and ice cream.
Attire: Class B
Detail: Scouts should have a day pack with at least 2 liters of water and bag lunch. Event limited to first 5 driving adults and 20 scouts.
Required: Permission slip due Feb 13th, 2018

Fremont Peak Camping & The Forest Nisene Marks Hike

Dates: Saturday to Sunday, August 19-20,2017
Location: Fremont Peak State Park & The Forest Nisene Marks State Park
Meet: Saturday 6:30am at Sycamore Park and Ride
Return: Sunday between 11am and 1pm at Sycamore Park and Ride. Scouts will call 30-60 minutes ahead with a firm ETA.
Cost: $55 (covers campsite, mileage and food)
Attire: Class A, hiking boots or good walking shoes, rain gear, sleeping bag and pad, 10 essentials
Bring: Sack lunch & trail snacks for Saturday
Required: Permission slip due Tuesday August 8 at Troop Meeting
