[Rescheduled] Introduction to Snow Camping

Location: Carson Pass & South Lake Tahoe
Meet: Saturday 6am @ Danville Park & Ride
Return: Sunday ~5pm @ Danville Park & Ride
Cost: $95. Includes cabin, snowshoes, transportation, permits and all meals (except Saturday sack lunch).
Attire: Snow gear
Prerequisites: 7th grade scouts and above.
Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 4 adults, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Required:

  • Permission slip & payment due on January 17th
  • Mandatory planning meetings

Introduction to snow camping in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We will learn basic snow camping skills, such as proper equipment, staying dry & warm, building snow shelters, and snowshoeing. We will be in the snow at Carson Pass during the day, and spend the night in a cabin at South Lake Tahoe. Sunday we’ll go for a snowshoe before returning home.

Note: With the emphasis on safety, the schedule of this outing may change or even be cancelled on short notice based on snow levels, weather and mountain conditions. (We are retaining the option of shifting the outing to Sunday/Monday if weather requires.)

Mandatory Meetings:
01/17 (Tu) – Permission slip and payment due
01/24 (Tu) – Training (equipment) – for scouts & parents
01/31 (Tu) – Meal planning
02/07 (Su) – Equipment check

Bring:
– Saturday trail lunch in gallon Ziplocks – no paper bags

Intermediate Snow Camping

iglooDate: February 14-16, 2015 (Saturday – Monday)
Location: Carson Pass
Cost: $100. Includes cabin, snowshoes, transportation, Sat dinner, Sun breakfast, snacks, hot drinks.
Attire: Snow gear
Prerequisites:
– 8th grade scouts and above
– Must have attended Intro to Snow Camping / Snowshoe outing
– Review snow camping information here
Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 5 adults, on a first come, first served basis.
Required: Permission slip

We will hike (or snowshoe) a short distance from our cars (100-500 yards) into camp at Carson Pass, and begin to construct snow shelters, returning to a cabin at South Lake Tahoe to sleep the first night. The second day, we will finish building our snow shelters and sleep in them, cooking and eating several meals in the snow environment, returning Monday.

Important Dates:
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Permission slip and payment due at PLC
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory planning/instructional meeting at PLC
02/03 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory gear check at Troop meeting
02/14 (Sa) 7am – Meet at Sycamore Park and Ride
02/16 (Mo) 3pm – (Approx) Return to Sycamore Park and Ride. Scouts will call 30 minutes ahead with ETA.

Bring:
– Sunday Sack lunch
– Monday lunch or $10
– Clothes for cabin in a very small duffel bag
– Camping items in backpack (see checklist)

Do Not Bring:
– Non-essential or bulky equipment

Introduction to Snow Camping

Cost: $85. Includes cabin, snowshoes, transportation, Sun dinner, Mon breakfast, snacks, hot drinks.
Attire: Snow gear
Prerequisites: 6th grade scouts and above, with priority to 7th grade scouts.
Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 5 adults, on a first come, first served basis.
Required: Permission slip

We will learn basic snow skills like staying dry and warm while working in the snow, how to build snow shelters, and how to snowshoe. We will work and play in the snow at Carson Pass during the day, and spend the night in a cabin at South Lake Tahoe.

Important Dates:

01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory planning/instructional meeting at PLC
02/03 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory gear check at Troop meeting

– WARM, WATERPROOF CLOTHES: gloves, boots, pants, coat, hat, sunglasses/goggles
– Sleeping bag & pillow
– Change of clothes
– Hygiene supplies

– Non-essential or bulky equipment
