Intermediate Snow Camping

iglooDate: February 14-16, 2015 (Saturday – Monday)
Location: Carson Pass
Cost: $100. Includes cabin, snowshoes, transportation, Sat dinner, Sun breakfast, snacks, hot drinks.
Attire: Snow gear
Prerequisites:
– 8th grade scouts and above
– Must have attended Intro to Snow Camping / Snowshoe outing

Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 5 adults, on a first come, first served basis.
Required: Permission slip

We will hike (or snowshoe) a short distance from our cars (100-500 yards) into camp at Carson Pass, and begin to construct snow shelters, returning to a cabin at South Lake Tahoe to sleep the first night. The second day, we will finish building our snow shelters and sleep in them, cooking and eating several meals in the snow environment, returning Monday.

Important Dates:
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Permission slip and payment due at PLC
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory planning/instructional meeting at PLC
02/03 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory gear check at Troop meeting
02/14 (Sa) 7am – Meet at Sycamore Park and Ride
02/16 (Mo) 3pm – (Approx) Return to Sycamore Park and Ride. Scouts will call 30 minutes ahead with ETA.

Bring:
– Sunday Sack lunch
– Monday lunch or $10
– Clothes for cabin in a very small duffel bag
– Camping items in backpack (see checklist)

Do Not Bring:
– Non-essential or bulky equipment

Introduction to Snow Camping

Prerequisites: 6th grade scouts and above, with priority to 7th grade scouts.
Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 5 adults, on a first come, first served basis.
Required: Permission slip

We will learn basic snow skills like staying dry and warm while working in the snow, how to build snow shelters, and how to snowshoe. We will work and play in the snow at Carson Pass during the day, and spend the night in a cabin at South Lake Tahoe.

Easy Hike at Briones

BrionesDate: January 10th (Saturday)
Time: 7:45am – 1:30pm
Location: Briones Regional Park (map)
Cost: Free
Attire: Class B
Required: Permission slip. Due January 6th.

Lets kick off 2015 with a fun and easy 5 mile hike in beautiful Briones Regional Park. This is an easy hike. However as scouts you should be prepared with proper shoes, attire, sun protection and water. Ideally you should have your 10 essentials and a day pack and carry water. Remember January is rainy season for us.

Important Dates:

01/06 (Tu) 07:00pm – Permission slip due at Troop meeting
01/10 (Sa) 07:45am – Meet at Sycamore Park and Ride, depart 08:00am
01/10 (Sa) 12:30pm – Scouts will be dropped off at home between 12:30 and 1:30 pm. Boys will call about one-half hour before expected arrival time.

This is a great opportunity to work on an awesome merit badge. You will learn about safety, tack, caring for a horse, horse health, confirmation, breeds, etc.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Drill

WHO: Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts, along with parent drivers, working with CERT-trained volunteers and Ham Radio Operators.

WHAT: Semi-annual Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Drill covering the San Ramon Valley. Pairs of scouts will be stationed in parts of our community and will read emergency scenarios to mobile Ham Radio Operators, who will prioritize the information and radio in the most important situations to our EOC (Emergency Operations Center). Parent drivers will need to shuttle scouts and may be need to drive Ham Radio Operators through the neighborhoods.

WHEN: Saturday, November 15; 9:00-11:00 a.m. (~2 hours)

WHERE: San Ramon Valley.

WHY: (1) Serve your community; (2) Fulfill requirement # 7 for the Eagle-required Emergency Preparation Merit Badge; (3) Learn more about the Emergency Response and Multi-agency Operations; (4) See CERT procedures in action; (5) Have fun!!!

BONUS: As a “thank you” at 12 noon our Fire Department will give a free pizza lunch and special tour of a fire station (station # 36 near Blackhawk East Gate). You won’t want to miss this one!

HOW: Fill out the permission slip, have your parents sign it, and bring it with you on Saturday. Also, be sure to indicate if you will

  • participate in the CERT Drill only (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.) OR
  • participate in the CERT Drill (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.) PLUS pizza lunch/fire station tour (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

We need at least 10 Scouts and 4 parent to drive.  Thanks much for support this important community drill!

Bowling

bowlingDate: December 7th (Sunday)
Time: 2:45pm – 5:00pm
Location: Danville Bowl, 200 Boone Court, Danville, CA 94526 (map)
Cost: $20 per participant
Attire: Class A
Required: Permission slip – due December 2nd

Have fun bowling 3 games while getting to know and welcoming Webelos who are considering joining Troop 805 when they bridge next year. There are a limited number of lanes, so registration is on a first received priority basis. All equipment is included. However, if you want a snack or drink, please bring money for the vending machines or grill.  All scouts should arrange their own transportation to and from Danville Bowl. This event does not include transportation.
