Kiwanis Service Project – Youth-2-Youth Conference

y2yDate: March 5th (Saturday)
Time: 6:30am – 9:00am
Location: Dougherty Valley High School (map)
Meet & Pickup: Dougherty Valley High School
Attire: Class A
Cost: None
Required: Permission slip due March 1st at Troop meeting

All scout groups need a sponsoring organization and we have been fortunate to have the Kiwanis sponsor us for a number of years now. One of the ways we show our appreciation for their sponsorship is by helping out with their service projects.

The Kiwanis support the middle school Youth To Youth conference each year and will be doing so again this year. Our troop helps the Kiwanis with this event. In the past, we helped prepare a breakfast for the conference counselors and help with registration. Detail of this year’s project has not been confirmed yet, but they will likely be similar to previous years.

Based on results from past years, this service project opportunity will not be open to our incoming Webelos scouts. For these scouts, stay alert as there will definitely be other opportunities to do service for our community.

Important Dates:
03/01 (Tue) – Permission slip due at Troop meeting
03/05 (Sat) 06:30am – Drop off scouts at Dougherty Valley High School
03/05 (Sat) 09:00am – Pick up scouts at Dougherty Valley High School

Contact Mr Matsunaga (925-838-1617) for questions.

Danville Today News

Our own Eagle Scout Chris Behring is in a cover story in Danville Today News – December edition. Here is an excerpt. Check out the full article here!

Inspired by his grandfather’s recollections of serving as a fighter pilot in Viet-nam, Danville Scout Chris Behring knew he wanted his Eagle Project to benefit veterans. Working with Maureen Morley, EBSD Special Projects Coordinator, Chris designed and executed his project in 2014 supporting EBSD by raising money for sleeping bags and directing fellow scouts from his troop in videotaping interviews with veterans for the Library of Congress History Project. Big 5 Sporting Goods, a regular EBSD sponsor, provided high quality sleeping bags at $15 apiece for veterans to keep after Stand Down. With the help of troop mates and the Rotary Clubs he personally addressed, Behring was able to raise over $11,000.

In order to qualify for inclusion in the Library of Congress Project, each recording of a veteran recounting his or her military experiences must last at least 30 minutes. A special tent was setup for the interviews. Commenting on his favorite memory from this portion of his Eagle Project Behring recalls, “One Marine Veteran told a few stories in his interview that he had never told anyone before. His wife was there and she was very grateful because she had never before heard much about what her husband had done during his military service.” Behring was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held on May 17, 2015.

Congratulations Chris on this acknowledgement of your eagle project and your part to help support veterans!

This project is an annual National BSA service project where non-perishable foods are collected for the local food banks. We will go door-to-door with informational flyers requesting donations on Saturday November 14th, and collect and deliver the donations to a central point at the LDS church in Danville on Saturday November 21st. Scouts may choose to participate on either or both days.

This is a great event to bring a friend (1st class requirement 10). Scouts will also earn service hours for rank advancement.

Since our assigned area is large and spread out (roughly 1.5 sq. miles with over 1300 houses), we will need many scouts and drivers to help on both days. Parents who can drive, please fill out the information especially providing your cell phone number.

** Donut breakfast will be provided for participating scouts & parent drivers. **

Contact Mrs Yu and Mr Laubach if you have questions.

On September 11, 2001, thousands of people lost their lives in one of the most infamous attacks on America. We will honor & remember them during San Ramon Valley’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. All uniformed scouts and leaders are invited to participate in this meaningful patriotic ceremony. Some Scouts will be pre-staged and some Scouts will march in holding American Flags at the All Wars Memorial. The guest speaker is Burt Upson, a survivor of the attack. He was in one of the towers that was destroyed and barely escaped with his life. All are welcome to attend the
ceremony and stay for a light meal afterward.

Troop Meeting @ Blackhawk Auto Museum

To Troop 805,

For Tuesday, September 1st, 2015, our troop meeting location is NOT at the Sycamore Elementary School – MPR. Please make a note on your calendar.

DATE: Tuesday, September 1st, 2015
TIME: 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (normal troop meeting hours)
LOCATION: Blackhawk Auto Museum (3700 Blackhawk Plaza Cir, Danville)

BACKGROUND:

In mid-September, Mr. David Behring will be accompanying 25 World War II Veterans to Washington DC – taking part in the “Honor Flight” trip to our Nation’s capitol to visit various memorials. Mr. Behring is one of the “Guardians” on that trip accompanying the veterans.

As part of the “Honor Flight” experience for our veterans, they will be given letters, written by school children and various youth groups like the boy scouts, to read and enjoy. These letters are “surprises” for them – letters thanking them for their service and sacrifices are very touching and comforting to them – what a great way to honor their service to our country!

TUESDAY – SEPTEMBER 1st – TROOP MEETING:

So, on Tuesday, September 1st, Mr. Behring has invited the entire troop to meet at the Blackhawk Auto Museum. Mr. Behring will be talking to our scouts and providing some background information on the “Greatest Generation” and what is the “Honor Flight” experience. He will also provide the letter head paper for the boys to write on.

After the letter writing, scouts can enjoy an evening of exploring the museum, checking out the cool cars and two very cool exhibits (Spirit of the Old West and American Jukeboxes and Gas Pumps).

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU goes to Mr. David Behring for his generosity and for inviting us to participate in the letter writing campaign for the “Honor Flight” experience.

I look forward to seeing all scouts this coming Tuesday at the Blackhawk Museum.

Yours in Scouting,

Ray Chan
Troop 805 Scoutmaster
NYLT Course Director
