Ohlone Wilderness Backpacking

Dates: Sat-Sun, April 16-17, 2016
Meet: Saturday, 7:00 a.m. sharp at the Danville Park & Ride
Return: Scouts will be returned to their homes at approximately 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
Cost: $45. Covers backpacking meals, trail snacks, campground & permits.
Attire: T805 hiking or other synthetic wicking shirt. (No cotton!)

Details:
– Participants need appropriate backpacking and quality rain gear: backpacks, 10 essentials, boots, waterproof shells (for body, head and packs – no ponchos!), layered clothing, extra socks, gallon ziplocks for dry clothes, synthetic sleeping bags, and a full 3 liters of water. No cotton! (“Cotton kills.”)
– Bring sack lunch for Saturday (in gallon Ziploc, not paper sack). All other meals will be provided.
– We will need drivers to take us from Park & Ride to Sunol Regional Park on Saturday, and to pick us up at Del Valle Regional Park on Sunday. Please indicate if you can help out by driving.

Required:
– 03/22 Permission slip due at Troop Meeting
– 03/22 Mandatory planning meeting at Troop meeting
– 04/12 Mandatory pack check at Troop meeting

A very challenging 20-mile two-day backpack from Sunol Regional Park through the beautiful Ohlone Wilderness to Del Valle Regional Park. Day 1 will involve approximately 4,000 vertical feet of climbing over 10 miles, in about 7 hours of hiking. Day 2 is about as much descending over another 10 miles. This strenuous intermediate-level backpack is open to scouts with significant troop backpacking experience.

(Note: There is an introductory Sunol Backpack trip for scouts new to backpacking this same weekend.)

Kiwanis Service Project – Youth-2-Youth Conference

Required: Permission slip due March 1st at Troop meeting

All scout groups need a sponsoring organization and we have been fortunate to have the Kiwanis sponsor us for a number of years now. One of the ways we show our appreciation for their sponsorship is by helping out with their service projects.

The Kiwanis support the middle school Youth To Youth conference each year and will be doing so again this year. Our troop helps the Kiwanis with this event. In the past, we helped prepare a breakfast for the conference counselors and help with registration. Detail of this year’s project has not been confirmed yet, but they will likely be similar to previous years.

Based on results from past years, this service project opportunity will not be open to our incoming Webelos scouts. For these scouts, stay alert as there will definitely be other opportunities to do service for our community.

Troop Apparel

ClassBHi Troop 805 Families,

It’s that time of year again to order your much needed troop 805 apparel. There are a few new items on the order form this year. There is a new shirt design for the Class-B t-shirt, and two new items: a fleece jacket and an acrylic beanie. Here is the Troop 805 Apparel Order Form. Please keep in mind that all apparel will be ordered just one time per year.

If you are a new scout to the troop, there is no need to pay for a class-B t-shirt since one comes with your initial dues, unless you would like an extra one. Please make sure you fill in your shirt size information and put the words: “new scout” next to your name on the order form.

To place your order: fill out page 2 of the order form, staple with a check made out to “Troop 805”, and turn it in to your Patrol Leader at the troop meeting. If you are unable to attend a troop meeting before the due date, please send me an email at: elizabeth@thegarys.net to make arrangements to mail your order form and check.

Please note that all orders and payments are due at the troop meeting no later than Tuesday, February 2, 2016. I will send out an email when the items have arrived to arrange for delivery at the troop meeting.
