Nature & Environment Day Camp

Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm
Location: Camp Herms, El Cerrito, CA (map)
Cost: $300 + $50 / week for merit badge work

The day camp is centered at Camp Herms and nearby East Bay Regional Park lands. A crew of up to 12 Scouts will investigate the Wildcat Creek watershed and see for themselves how biotic and abiotic forces shape and change the watershed’s ecology. This is an in-depth and hands-on way to learn from export University of California instructors how ecological science is done. Scouts will study insects, birds, plants, animals, water courses, micro-climates, soils, and so much more.

Participants can complete the requirements for the Nature, Soil and Water Conservation, Fish and Wildlife Management, and the Environmental Science merit badges. Scouts with the Citizenship in the World merit badge may earn the World Conservation Award. Motivated Scouts may earn the Scout Naturalist Award.

Participants will be responsible for their own meals. Merit badge work may be completed with approved counselors from 3:00-5:00 M-F with a $50/week fee.

The Crayon Initiative

Our troop has an opportunity to help The Crayon Initiative recycle nonbiodegradable crayons into new ones to distribute to art programs at children’s hospitals. Scouts who sign up would sort a box of crayons by color and return them to Mr. Matsunaga. This fun activity reduces waste, brings joy to hospitalized children, and can also earn service hours towards either regular or conservation requirements.

If you would like to help or have any questions please email Mr. Matsunaga at nkmats@aol.com with your name. You can check out their website to learn more about them.
