Scout Skills Weekend

– 2nd year scouts and above: March 27-29 (Fri-Sun)
– 1st year scouts: March 28-29 (Sat-Sun)
Location: Sugarloaf Open Area
Attire: Class A
Cost: $25
Bring:
– 2nd year scouts and above: Friday dinner
– 1st year scouts: Saturday lunch
– All scouts: 10 essentials, mess kit
Required: Permission slip

An overnight camping trip & Scout Skill Weekend at nearby Sugarloaf Open Space. Skills will include Firem’n Chit, Totin’ Chip, and a variety of other camping skills (e.g. Cooking, First Aid, Fire Building, Leadership Training, Compass and Pioneering).

Important Dates:
03/17 (Tue) – Permission slip due at Troop meeting
03/27 (Fri) 05:00pm – 2nd year scouts and above meet at Sugarloaf Open Area
03/28 (Sat) 09:00am – 1st year scouts meet at Sugarloaf Open Area
03/29 (Sun) 11:30am – All scouts pick up at Sugarloaf Open Area

Shooting Sports Day

Bring: Your own lunch

Note: This event overlaps with Kiwanis Y2Y Service Project in time. Do not sign up for both events without speaking to the Outing ASMs first.

Sharpen your Marksmanship Skills! BSA Rangemasters will open the Rifle, Shotgun and Archery Ranges for Scouts to practice their marksmanship skills.

But before you dive into the inspiring Scouting journey of him, maybe you should know one of his current missions is to get as many from our Troop to attend L.E.A.D as possible. If you still haven’t signed up yet, NOW is the time! 🙂

Scout Spotlight

Kent Screechfield

kentKent Screechfield joined Pack 802 with his son Brett in February of 2000, and was a co-Den Leader for his son’s first year. He became the Den Leader the following year, added Assistant Cubmaster 6 months later and then became the Pack Cubmaster in 2002. In 2005, he and his son joined Troop 805, where he became an Assistant Scoutmaster. Shortly after that he became Scoutmaster, a position he held for 6 years. Although Brett, an Eagle Scout, is now a junior at the University of Portland, Kent continues to be very involved with the Troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster. During his time with Troop 805 Kent has had the privilege of assisting over 30 scouts attain the rank of Eagle.

Kent has been involved with the Meridian District since 2004, and has taken roles as popcorn chair and Cub training chair and is now the new District Chair. Kent has also been involved and/or on staff in many scout adult training events (Health and Safety, BALOO, NLS-PS, OW4WL, OLS) and has been on staff for the Meridian District Camporee, including being Camporee Scoutmaster for two years. Kent has also been involved at the Council level with Cub Scout Pow Wow and now with LEAD since its inception. Besides being an instructor for LEAD, he has helped on the facilities staff, been an assistant Dean, Dean of Continuing Education and overall Dean of Curriculum. This year he is Assistant Program Director.

Kent’s Scouting awards include the Cub Scouter, Cubmaster, Boy Scout Leader, Scoutmaster’s Key Training awards, the Unit Leader award of Merit, the Meridian Chairman’s Award, the District Award of Merit and he is a 2014 Silver Beaver Recipient. Kent also took the Wood Badge Course in 2004 and completed the requirements in May of 2005.

Kent has had many adventures with his son Brett in scouting but Kent’s biggest adventure recently was to rappel “Over the Edge” of the 15 story One Concord Plaza, the building where he works. Kent raised over $2,300 in donations so Brett was able to go over, too. Said Kent when he hit the ground “I feel great. It was amazing.”

Intermediate Snow Camping

iglooDate: February 14-16, 2015 (Saturday – Monday)
Location: Carson Pass
Cost: $100. Includes cabin, snowshoes, transportation, Sat dinner, Sun breakfast, snacks, hot drinks.
Attire: Snow gear
Prerequisites:
– 8th grade scouts and above
– Must have attended Intro to Snow Camping / Snowshoe outing
– Review snow camping information here
Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 5 adults, on a first come, first served basis.
Required: Permission slip

We will hike (or snowshoe) a short distance from our cars (100-500 yards) into camp at Carson Pass, and begin to construct snow shelters, returning to a cabin at South Lake Tahoe to sleep the first night. The second day, we will finish building our snow shelters and sleep in them, cooking and eating several meals in the snow environment, returning Monday.

Important Dates:
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Permission slip and payment due at PLC
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory planning/instructional meeting at PLC
02/03 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory gear check at Troop meeting
02/14 (Sa) 7am – Meet at Sycamore Park and Ride
02/16 (Mo) 3pm – (Approx) Return to Sycamore Park and Ride. Scouts will call 30 minutes ahead with ETA.

Bring:
– Sunday Sack lunch
– Monday lunch or $10
– Clothes for cabin in a very small duffel bag
– Camping items in backpack (see checklist)

Do Not Bring:
– Non-essential or bulky equipment

Introduction to Snow Camping

snowshoeingDate: February 15-16, 2015 (Sunday – Monday)
Location: Carson Pass
Cost: $85. Includes cabin, snowshoes, transportation, Sun dinner, Mon breakfast, snacks, hot drinks.
Attire: Snow gear
Prerequisites: 6th grade scouts and above, with priority to 7th grade scouts.
Important: Limited to 12 Scouts and 5 adults, on a first come, first served basis.
Required: Permission slip

We will learn basic snow skills like staying dry and warm while working in the snow, how to build snow shelters, and how to snowshoe. We will work and play in the snow at Carson Pass during the day, and spend the night in a cabin at South Lake Tahoe.

Important Dates:
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Permission slip and payment due at PLC
01/27 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory planning/instructional meeting at PLC
02/03 (Tu) 7pm – Mandatory gear check at Troop meeting
02/15 (Su) 7am – Meet at Sycamore Park and Ride
02/16 (Mo) 2pm – (Approx) Return to Sycamore Park and Ride. Scouts will call 30 minutes ahead with ETA.

Bring:

– Duffel bag (preferred) or internal frame backpack
– WARM, WATERPROOF CLOTHES: gloves, boots, pants, coat, hat, sunglasses/goggles
– Sleeping bag & pillow
– Change of clothes
– Hygiene supplies

Do Not Bring:
– Non-essential or bulky equipment
